Obituary for Mary G. Sykes

Mary G. Sykes was born on March 1, 1935, to the proud parent of Igentry Jones in Columbus, Mississippi. Mary spent most of her childhood there until she married her husband Bailey Sykes at the age of 15, after having their 1st child they moved to Kankakee, IL.

Mr. & Mrs. Sykes resided in Kankakee, IL until she departed from us on Aug. 3, 2019, at 5:15 p.m. Mary enjoyed songwriting, cosmetology, making handkerchiefs, cooking and baking sweet potato pies and serving her church.

Mary worked very hard to provide for her children she was employed for many years at The Kankakee State Hospital, Joliet Army ammunition plant, Dwight correctional center, and she retired from the KCC Dr. King Center parenting program.

Mary confessed Christ at an early age and upon moving to Kankakee she became one of the founding members of the Zion Gate Missionary Baptist Church where she served for many years under the leadership of Dr. John E. Thompson. Over the years she served others including Apostle Kenneth McEastland, Pastor Bruce Sykes and her most recent pastor Apostle Tryphenia McEastland of The Friendship MB Church.

Mary G. leaves to cherish her memories a total of 8 children, Mary Elaine & Hueston Bullitt of Las Vegas, NV, Delois Calmes of Kankakee, IL, Linda & Ronald Coffie of Kankakee, IL, Tryphenia & Kenneth McEastland of Kankakee, IL, Cynthia & Allen Barnes of Kankakee, IL, Regina & Cornell Gathing of Atlanta, GA, Bailey & Christina Sykes of Peoria, IL, and Bruce & Charlesetta Sykes of Atlanta, GA. Mary G. also has a total of 27 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. In addition, she has 3 God-Children Helen Davis of Duluth, MN, and Shelley & Kimberley Doggett of Kankakee, IL.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Bailey Sykes, her mother Igentry Johnson, two brothers Ernest & Otis Johnson, also her sister Marjory Thompson, and lastly her grandson Cornell Allen Gathering.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 10 AM at Mt Calvary Baptist Church. Apostle Kenneth McEastland will officiate and Apostle Tryphenia McEastland is the eulogist.
